There are seemingly simple hair care questions that many of us don’t know the answer to, like how often should you wash your hair and how often should you have it cut? Sometimes it’s worth going back to basics when you want your hair to look fab and be healthy.
With a few simple tips you can stop the frizz, avoid damage and keep your locks looking shiny. Getting into good habits is key, so take a look at these 10 basic tips that will change your hair routine for the better:
EAT A BALANCED DIET
Just as your body needs good nutrition so does your hair. Make sure you drink plenty of water and eat a diet rich in vitamins and minerals to maintain that glossy-haired look. Leafy greens and quality proteins will really help strengthen your tresses too.
HAVE REGULAR TRIMS
The best way to keep on top of split ends is to get your hair trimmed regularly. Having your locks cut every six to eight weeks might also promote thicker growth.
DON'T WASH TOO OFTEN
The first question when it comes to hair care is how often should you wash your hair? In truth, there is no exact answer. It’s down to knowing what’s right for your hair type and lifestyle. If your hair takes a pounding it’ll need more washing. If it’s dry it’ll need less washing than someone with oily hair. You do need to let the natural oils work their magic though, so don’t wash it every day with heavy shampoos.
Use a wide-tooth comb to smooth conditioner through from mid-point to the ends. On top of your regular conditioning regime, use a deep conditioning treatment every other week to maintain the shine. And don’t forget: the ends always need more conditioning than the roots!
Don’t wrap nor rub your hair with a towel to dry it, as this can cause damage, tangles and even hair breakage. Try squeezing out the excess water first and then pat dry rather than rub. This could help you avoid frizzy hair too!
BE CAREFUL WITH HEAT
Harsh heat from blow-drying and straighteners can cause damage to even the most resilient hair. Washing with really hot water is a no-no too, so turn down the temperature on all your hair care appliances and use heat sparingly. Try no-heat styling tools like hair rolls, for a change.
TEASE OUT TANGLES
If you tug at your locks you’re more likely to cause damage and worsen tangles than improve them. Use a wide-tooth comb and work gently from root to tip to tease them out. You want to break as few hair follicles in the process as possible!
BLOW DRY THE RIGHT WAY
Before you begin drying it is good practice to apply a protective cream, oil or serum. Then dry from the roots to the ends and brush in the same direction to help avoid frizz. If you like hair with a lot of texture, try blow drying it upside down for extra volume.
DON'T OVER STYLE
Hair products are great for getting cool looks, but you don’t want to overuse them. Try not to use them all the time, and when there’s an opportunity to let your hair hang naturally, do it!
LOOK AFTER YOUR BRUSHES AND COMBS
We’ve talked about how to use them, but don’t forget to clean your brushes and combs! Removing old hair and dirt (at least weekly) will stop grit and grime going back into the hair you’ve been looking after so well.
