summer picnic must haves and DIY's

There's nothing more summer time lifestyle then lying on a red plaid blanket in the sunny park with the one you love (or ones you love, family count too) with that wicker hamper stuffed with sandwiches, cocktail sausages, smoothies and juicy strawberries (let's throw in some scotch eggs too!) Picnics are the perfect excuse for a family get together without having to spend a fortune! Especially if everyone brings their own contribution to the picnic such as cakes, sandwiches, fizzy drinks etc! But more then just the food, there's the ambience, you can create something really special without breaking the bank, here are some of my must haves for creating a really special day!

Obviously you're going to need something to pack all your delicious food in, and this adorable two person hamper is currently on sale for £20 at BHS! It comes with plates, cups, cutlery and even salt and pepper shakers! It's the perfect centre piece of your picnic. BUY HERE

This isn't just any plastic cutlery, this is reusable, thick plastic with fancy embossing that will last you years! They come in blue pink and red and are so cute! These are currently on sale for £1.95 (down from £5!) so they are the ultimate bargain! BUY HERE (i may have just bought two sets of these...)

Some parks are pretty strict with what is allowed such as candles, BBQ's etc, so to get a bit of festivity why not string buting from surrounding trees, it's easily removed afterwards and will give your picnic area a real party feel, if you are using picnic tables you could hang these around the edge of the tables. These floral ones are on sale for £4.95 (from £12) BUY HERE

Who says food storage has to be boring! This adorable 3 set of Tupperware is perfect for holding grapes, sandwiches and more! And the good news is they fit inside each other so you can store these really easily! BUY HERE

Much like the bunting, grab yourself some solar powered or battery operated fairy lights and wrap them around trees for a really special look! These would be a great addition if the picnic was for someone's birthday, or anniversary! BUY HERE

If your staying out late, or just love yourself a cuppa, then a flask is a must! You could even fill it with hot chocolate for a treat! BUY HERE

More Tupperware! Yes, and this set of five is amazing. The bowls are glass which gives them a really posh picnic vibe and the plastic clip on lids are plaid! Need I say more. These would be perfect for potato salad, coleslaw, dips etc as the bowls can be popped straight into the dishwasher! BUY HERE

Here's some easy DIY's for making your picnic super fun!

NON ALCOHOLIC MARTINI - Simply grab yourself a plastic champagne glass, fill it with lemonade and pop in a couple of frozen grapes on a cocktail stick. Instant non alcoholic drink with fruit, perfect for kids or those of you who don't drink! (also alcohol can sometimes be illegal to consume in public areas such as family parks)

REUSABLE NAPKINS - Purchase yourself some floral fabric (you can buy sample sizes on ebay for 99p which would be the perfect size) make sure it's a square and then grab yourself a pair of pinking shears - they're the scissors with the zig zag edge and cut each edge until you are left with a napkin size piece with cute edging. You could sew along the edges to stop fraying, but these are easy to clean and reusable!

OREO TRUFFLES - I have made these a couple of times and they are freaking delicious! You simply need 200g of Oreos and 200g of PLAIN Philadelphia cheese. Blend the Oreos into crumbs, mix in the Philadelphia and roll into balls, then FREEZE for 2 hours. Melt some chocolate, cover the truffles and add some sprinkles! Once dry, eat and weep tears of joy!! Try flavoured Oreos for different truffles!

MINI STRAWBERY DESSERTS - Buy some plastic shot classes, fill the bottom with crumbs of vanilla sponge cake and then add a small spoonfull of strawberry jelly, next add a layer of chopped strawberry's and top with whipped cream and a strawberry! Perfect bite sized dessert!

RAINBOW KEBABS - This one is very visually pleasing, so get your imagination at the ready. Grab yourself some long kebab sticks, and the following fruits: Strawberry, Mango, Pineapple, Green Grape, Blueberries, Red Grape. Chop the big fruits up into squares and slide the fruit onto the sticks in the same order I just mentioned. See before you a wonderful fruit rainbow, once all the sticks are lined up the plate will be full of colour, and totally healthy too!!

I hope this has got you in the mood to host your own picnic (I know I'm itching to make those Oreo truffles again!) Let me know if you buy, or try any of the things I've mentioned and let me know if you have any of your own DIY ideas or must haves! HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

  1. Love the tupperware, looks so much more impressive than the usual stuff. I also have that picnic basket from BHS but in a different pattern. It's fab!

  2. Great post, something a little different! I love the bunting!
